Spread Indie Love is an Instagram movement that was created to counter the negativity that was running rampant in the indie nail polish community about a year ago. Each month, an indie maker is chosen to shower with love by doing manicures made with their polishes, and posting them with the hashtag for that maker and #spreadindielove. Continue Reading

Randomly Generated Mani – Would you?

SinfulColors - Opening Night topped with China Glaze - Glimmer More
SinfulColors – Opening Night topped with China Glaze – Glimmer More

I’ve been trying get the number of untrieds in my stash down lately. I came up with the Randomly Generated Mani as a way to stop agonizing over what to wear when I was feeling indecisive. I plunk the size of my spreadsheeet into the handy generator at Random.org and click generate until it gives me something I haven’t tried yet. Sometimes I’ll look for a second, like this glitter topper, and off I go!

Today I got SinfulColors – Opening Night, a dark teal shimmer. Opening Night stained my nails, despite two coats of base coat, so be careful with that one. Use a thick base coat, at least two coats, and don’t use it over a pva glue base without something in between; the acid in the glue makes it easy for polish to stain your nails.

On top, a cheerful glitter topper from China Glaze – Glimmer More. This topper has small fuchsia hexes, and large pale pink, peach, and yellow hexes. Fishing glitter out is no problem, but application works best with a dab and spread method. The base is kind of thick, so all the glitter want to clump up in one place if you let it.

Let me know what you think of this one. Would you ever let a computer choose your nail polish colours for you? Is your nail polish stash big enough that you need to? Tell me in the comments!

notd: L’Oreal – New Money

L'Oreal - New Money, 3 coats
L’Oreal – New Money, 3 coats

Hi! You know, it’s been so long since I blogged that I have no idea what I’m doing anymore. I hope you’ll bear with me as I get used to it again. This isn’t a fancy post or anything, just a nail of the day, and I’ll probably do some more of them as I get used to blogging again, but it’s good to be back, if a little nerve wracking.

I’ve been working through a bunch of my untried polishes lately, as I have *ahem* rather a lot. I’m pretty sure I picked this one up on clearance early this summer, but I can’t remember. This is three coats of L’Oreal – New Money, and the brush was cut very badly. If I hadn’t been dealing with an angled brush shape, I might have been able to get away with two. I’ll have to trim the brush before I use it next time. A friend of mine also pointed out on instagram that she’s found L’Oreal brushes to be pretty poorly cut in general, so next time I’ll be looking at the brush before I buy, for sure.

Aside from the brush quality, I found the polish did apply reasonably easily, and dried pretty quickly. It wasn’t difficult to get an even creme finish, and it cleaned up at my cuticles easily with acetone and a brush. What do you think of this sort of colour near Halloween? I thought it was pretty seasonally appropriate, myself.

Julep Swatches – Shelly, Margit, Casey

Julep Shelly

I’ve got three swatches from the January 2015 Julep Maven box today. I was pleasantly surprised with all of them, though a couple had some minor issues. Above is two coats of Julep – Shelly a palest robin-egg blue that hates being photographed. I did some colour editing on this, and got the nails as close as I could, but it’s still a bit inaccurate. It’s more blue-green and less grey than the photos suggest. More photos and swatches after the break.
